Here is a 40" wide turret roof caps (not including the tails) for a house in Resaca, Georgia that we made for our client Lawrence G. Massey Jr..

Here is the gazebo/porch roof the cap is to go on. It is a round cone shaped roof he meticulously built over their front porch with an 11/12 pitch roof.  I designed this to have 16 sides for a more circular look with a 12/12 pitch for the lower section with a steeple cone for the upper section, with a sealed finial support pipe built into the center of this gazebo roof cap. This is a medium size 1/6 scale roof cap for the 20' wide circular roof it goes on.

He liked the tail style that David Bower MD had made. It was my job to redraw it to scale for this larger roof cap. I could have set it up to have 16 small tails, but I discussed it with the client and he agreed it would look better to have 8 larger tails, so you can better see what the style is from the ground.

Here is the sections drawn out on the copper from the aluminum metal template I made after working up the right math for this project. Because of the large size I was not able to get all 16 sides in one piece. I was able to get 12 sides in one section and cut the last 4 sides in a separate piece to hide 2 the seams on the back side.

This shows the base cap fully cut, bent, and assembled. If I did not have this bend though the center of the tail design the bottom of the tails would not be able to support the weight of the roof cap, but this added a lot of strength to them.

I then needed to secure the bottom of the support pipe to the tip of this cap with this stainless steel pipe clamp, solder, and rivets. I use a graduating coupler at the bottom of the pipe so I can rivet through the cap tip flanges into this without the rivets interfering with the brass mast rod that will go inside. I have to be careful to make sure the roof cap is sitting on a flat level surface so the reading of the pipe are perfectly level be fore I solder it in place.

Then there is to calculate the best size and angle for the 16 sided steeple cone cap to go over this pipe in order to support the top of the pipe.

This shows the steeple cone ready to be attached. I bend the bottom tabs inward to lay against the base cap surface to rivet up through these to layers of copper with at least 32 rivets to anchor it to the base cap.

Then there is to set up the blocking and copper screening for the hidden roof vent. I chose to set the blocks under the tails to help give them some sturdy support. I used a pair of stainless steel screws into each block 1" to each side of that center bend.

From 2 different angles this shows the screen in place just inside the blocking with the 45 degree bevel cut at each end.

Here is the roof cap completed and ready for shipping, I begin to build the wood crate with a 1x3 wood frame work glued and nailed over a 1/4" hardwood plywood base. There is a center cross board with a 1" hole cut in it to hold the roof cap tip.

The side rails are measured and cut, then attached. I then skin the sided with more of the plywood sheet

I included a solid brass mast rod for the Merlin finial he had already got from another retailer. Along with some Gorilla glue to apply to the bottom of the wood blocks just before installation to hold them to the roofing and lets the glue dry. He then removes the screws to set the long 3" deck screws in the blocks to anchor them to the roof. Then reattaches the roof cap over the blocking.

Cost: $860.88 php
