Copper Masks

Here is a metal face mask my Apprentice Chris Freedman and I designed/built for a client named Malik Odoms in Bossier Louisiana to wear during his musical performances. We started off with Malik sending us some digital pictures of a few examples he found of some animated characters. Can you guess which ones this mask had as it's inspiration? It was made primarily with 24oz copper w/stainless steel bolts in the forehead and teeth crowned for a menacing look.

Even though it took more than a couple hundred hours to design and build we only charge him $400 for this creation w/shipping. It should have been more like $1,500 or more for a custom mask like this. We had exchanged 37 e-mails and taking over an hundred digital images of our creation from cardboard mock-ups and aluminum mock-ups that Chris had made to this final copper version. It was an interesting project. Quite a departure from replacing gutters or building copper chimney caps, yet far from profitable. It has a separate jaw that is designed to move up and down with the wearer's jaw. The teeth are not placed in the middle to allow for his mic to be close to his lips.

We used some clear rubber strands for the jaw action and to secure it on his head. It is padded for comfort. You can also see the video we made that shows the jaw action:

Here are a couple photos sent to us by the proud owner wearing his mask. You can see the tarnishing of the copper already to a nice dull brown, where the stainless steel parts will remain this silver tone.

Here is an earlier face mask I made for myself for an event we went to in the summer of 2003. Besides being a little heavy, it was pretty comfortable. this is a demonstration of our versatility in design and fabrication. If you can imagine it, there is a good chance we can make it a reality.
