An 8 Sided 4 Step Graduating, Pitch Copper Roof (3-99)

Here is a gazebo roof we were contracted to cover with solid 16oz copper sheet metal for the Warkentin's in Banks, Oregon.  The gazebo was built to have a soft gradual curve to a steep peak.

The problem with this project was the the inconstancies with the construction.  We re-covered the roof with a layer of 1/4" hardboard to try and give it a smooth curve, and covered that over with 30 lb roofing felt

It still did not turn out as well as we needed it to, since the slightest flaw would show through the copper sheet metal covering.

We suggested to them the possibility of going a different style and covering it with this dramatic 4 tear construction instead. Other wise we would need to start all over to rebuild the roof, which would be very costly.

They agreed to this.  They lost the curved look they were hoping for, but it looks pretty unique to say the least.  We intentionally stepped each section out about 1.5" to make the graduations more visible.

We had originally bid this job at $1,800 to cover the roof, and we managed to stay within that cost, The extra wood work we did was another $430.

It was difficult to calculate all of the different angles needed. Especially with the fact that the sides were all a little off in their dimensions and angles.  We had to custom shaped each of the 24 sections, and installed them one at a time, taking measurements for each successive section to ascend.  Then fabricated the top cap for it there at the site.

Here it is finished, with the copper gutter installed. The 8 copper gutter sections and a downspout cost $500, for a total of $2,730 for this project.

Their kids first comment was "it looks like a spaceship".  We figured their comment was mostly due to it being all covered in shiny metal, but it would soon dull and darken.  It is certainly an original work of art.

By the end of this project we could see the development added unexpected complications.  We often think of how we should have charged more, but it is nice to get away from just doing gutters all the time.  It is also the cost of the learning curve we all must endure.

Here is a closer shot of the copper gutters to match.
