This solid 20oz copper turret roof cap was custom made for our clients named Jonnathan Bartel in Fair Grove, Missouri. It is for their steep 32/12 pitch octagonal roof that is a little over 8' wide on the house he is building.  The roof cap was bid to be 16.5" wide, but I went ahead and made it an 18" wide cap plus the soft scallop tails design below that.

I designed his cap with a 32/12 pitch plus steeple cone support for this small Victoria style finial. Even though this was a very steep and tall roof cap the base cap was still small enough that I was able to make it in a single sheet for a single seam construction.

Below is the bottom base of the support pipe being soldered and drilled out for long rivets to go through the 3 to 4 layers of copper here to hold it in place to be secure and independent of the roof. I then caulked over this to make sure it was double sealed from outside and underneath incase I had missed something. there is some silver gaffer's tape over the caulk.

I then made the steeple cone to cover this and support the top of the pipe. It was soldered to the pipe and a special coupling was soldered over the steeple cone tip to help anchor it in place to the pipe.

The steeple cone is attached to the base cap with 16 rivets from inside the base cap through the flange bent under the bottom edge of the steeple cone. I caulked over the rivet heads inside the base cap and double caulked the one seam.

The zip-lock bag taped on the steeple cone has some extra SS screws, alignment nails, a new #3 Phillips tip for the SS screws, with some clear caulk. I pre-drilled the screw holes and set the SS screws in place, as seen here.

Here is some daylight shots of the finished roof cap with the finial in place. Then Mr. Bartel was kind enough to send us these shots of his installation.

Hi David,
Because I could not get up high enough to mount the finial after the cap was mounted, I mounted it onto the cap first, which worked out fine. Instead of using electrical tape around the finial mounting bar, I wrapped it with aluminum sheet metal (like aluminum flashing) which helped the finial fit nice and tight in the cap, and will last longer.

Thank you for the prompt service and great quality of the turret cap. It fit great! I will recommend you to anyone else.
